MOSS-Image vs FLUX - how the open image models compare

Este artículo está disponible en inglés.
FLUX, from Black Forest Labs, has been the reference point for open image models since 2024. MOSS-Image arrived on October 16, 2026 with a different bet: a much smaller diffusion transformer paired with a large language-model text encoder. Here is how they compare on what each publisher documents, followed by our view on when to pick which.
We compare published specifications, not benchmark scores. Model quality depends on the prompt; the only test that counts is your own prompts on both models.

FLUX figures are from Black Forest Labs' model cards as we understand them; check the current cards before relying on any one value.
Size and speed
MOSS-Image's image transformer is 5B parameters, against 12B for FLUX.1 and 32B for FLUX.2 [dev]. A smaller transformer is cheaper per step, but MOSS-Image's recommended 50 steps with two forward passes each claw much of that back. FLUX.1 [schnell] is the speed outlier: it is distilled to produce an image in one to four steps.
In practice: for the fastest possible drafts, schnell wins. At default settings, MOSS-Image and FLUX.1 [dev] are in the same range; FLUX.2 [dev] needs considerably more hardware.
Licence
This is the clearest difference. MOSS-Image's weights are Apache 2.0, like FLUX.1 [schnell]. FLUX.1 [dev] and FLUX.2 [dev] ship under Black Forest Labs' non-commercial licences, with commercial use of the model available under separate terms. If you want to fine-tune, self-host or build a product on open weights without a licence negotiation, MOSS-Image and schnell are the options here.
Prompts and text
MOSS-Image reads prompts of up to 4K tokens through a Qwen3.5-9B text encoder and was trained with rendered text as a headline goal, in both English and Chinese. FLUX.1 also renders short English text reasonably well; FLUX.2 improved typography further. MOSS-Image's distinguishing points are the long context, Chinese lettering and the option to place text with bounding boxes.
Layout control
MOSS-Image accepts a JSON layout: a scene caption plus items with bounding boxes, so a headline, an object and a badge each get a region of the canvas. OpenMOSS marks it experimental, but none of the FLUX models above document bounding-box input in the prompt; with FLUX you place elements through wording or add-ons such as ControlNets. See our JSON layout guide.
Ecosystem
FLUX has a two-year head start: thousands of LoRAs, ControlNets, IP-Adapters and tuned workflows. MOSS-Image launched with ComfyUI, SGLang and vLLM-Omni support and gained community LoRA trainers, an 8-step distillation and FP16-fixed weights within its first week, but its library of add-ons is young.
Which should you use?
- Posters, packaging, signage, anything where the words matter, especially Chinese: start with MOSS-Image.
- Long, detailed scene descriptions: MOSS-Image's 4K-token context helps.
- Placing several elements in fixed regions: MOSS-Image's layout prompts.
- Commercial self-hosting on open weights: MOSS-Image or FLUX.1 [schnell].
- Huge LoRA ecosystem, specific styles or characters already trained: FLUX.1 [dev].
- Instant drafts: FLUX.1 [schnell].
Test it yourself
Pick three prompts from your real work: one with text, one product or portrait, one complex scene. Run each on both models at the same size and, where possible, the same seed, and judge the results at full size.
